The Ophthalmology department includes cornea-contact lens and refractive surgery, uvea, glaucoma, medical retina and vitro-retinal surgery, pediatric ophthalmology , strabismus, oculoplastic surgery and orbita units and provides services with advanced experience and technology.

Our retina unit, which is fully equipped, is one of the reference retina units in Turkey.  In the retina unit fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), argon laser photocoagulation, optical coherence tomography (OCT), photodynamic treatment (PDT), intravitreal injections as well as vitreo-retinal surgeries are performed for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases.  Diagnosis, treatment and follow up of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), retinal tears, retinal hemorrhage, retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy (DRP) , age related macular degeneration (AMD), central serous retinopathy and other retinal diseases are all succesfully performed.

Emergency treatment may be needed in cases of floaters or light flashes in the eye, or sudden visual losses. In such situations or in case of a sudden change in the actual state of a retinal disorder, you   have to obtain an urgent appointment from our hospital. You will receive services immediately upon your admission, and an early intervention will be possible.

The anterior segment structures of the eye are evaluated in our cornea-contact lens and refractive surgery unit.   All of the anterior segment infections, keratitis, xerophtalmia, cornea dystrophies, and keratoconus treatments are performed within this unit. For the follow-up of keratomalacia, the pachymeter is used to measure the thickness of the cornea, and computed corneal topography is used for the evaluation of the corneal surface as well as corneal ectasia screening and follow-up. Cataract surgery, Keratoplasty (cornea transplantation), kertoconus treatments, LASIK surgery, excimer laser surgery (refractive surgery), limbal stem cell transplantation, amnion membrane transplantation, and pterygium surgery with or without suture are performed successfully in this unit.

Spectacles and contact lenses are conventionally used to correct the refractive errors, such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. The Excimer Laser has emerged as a promising tool that has vastly improved the accuracy and safety of refractive surgery. A procedure called LASIK enables the the treatment of refractive errors with a very high level of precision.  In our department many refractive surgical procedures with good results are routinely performed by our cornea-contact lens and refractive surgery unit.

Anterior segment diseases are archived using a digital camera system, and these may be shared with the patients or the relatives. Soft, toric and rigid gas permeable contact lens, or bifocal and prosthetic contact lens applications are performed for patients with refractive disorders. Our clinic is a reference clinic concerning this issue.  Also visual rehabilitation with low vision aids is offered .

Uvea is the vascular middle coat of the eye, consisting of iris, choroid and ciliary processes.  Uveitis is the inflammation of this layer, associated with autoimmune or infectious diseases.  Uvea unit provides evaluation and management of immunologically mediated ocular diseases, such as uveitis, intraocular inflammation, scleritis, iritis.  This unit is ran by close coordination with other specialties such as rheumatology, infectious disease specialists, pediatrics.  Medical management with steroids and immunsupressives, surgical management of secondary cataract due to uveitis, management of secondary glaucoma is performed by this unit.

Glaucoma is a term describing a group of ocular disorders with multi-factorial etiology united by a clinically characteristic intraocular pressure-associated optic neuropathy. It is crucial to diagnose glaucoma at early stages as it can permanently damage vision in the affected eye(s) and lead to blindness if left untreated.  The methods and instruments that are used to diagnose and treat glaucoma include tonometers that measure the intra-ocular pressure, pachymetry that measures the thickness of the cornea, visual field test (Humphrey) which demonstrates the extent of visual loss in the optic nerve and  optic nerve fiber analysis (HRT, OCT), which is the product of modern technology.

Diseases that may be treated by oculoplastic surgery include correction of ptosis, aesthetic eyelid surgery, correction of the structural/positional disorders of the eyelid border and the eyelashes, opening of pediatric and adult lacrimal channel obstructions, resection of benign and malignant tumors in the eye lid or within the orbit and cosmetic correction, prosthetic eye applications, correction of structural deformities of the eye due to thyroid diseases, correction of trauma-related eyelid cuts, drainage system tears and orbital fractures and the treatment of involuntary contractions around the eye surgically or by Botox injection.  Endoscopy guided probing, orbita decompression surgeries, blepharoplasty, entropion and ectropion correction, levator procedures are routinely performed in this unit.

Pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus  unit focuses on the full spectrum of pediatric eye problems and both childhood and adult strabismus.  Patients with ambliyopia, congenital cataract, ROP, nistagmus, refractive disorders of children, esotropia, exotropia, hypertropia, diplopia, anisometropia are all diagnosed and treated in this unit.  Botox enjections and muscle surgeries are routinely performed.

Local anaesthesia is usually preferred in the operations performed in our unit, and the patients are discharged the same day or the next day after the operation. Hospitalization may be extended when necessary. Current surgical techniques are performed in the treatment of diseases with an experienced staff and the use of advanced technology.
